Fossils of Venice

Welcome to Fossils of Venice.  We are located in the shark tooth capital of world.  We have been collecting sharks teeth and fossils in Southwest Florida for 10 years.

We have teeth from many species including Megalodon, Mako, Lemon, Sand Tiger and more.  Because sharks are made mostly of cartilage, which does not fossilize well, their teeth are the only thing that remains of them when they are gone. A shark will lose up to 20,000 teeth in its lifetime.  Another interesting bit of information, one inch of tooth correlates to 10 feet of shark.  If you find a 5" tooth, the shark that it came from would have been 50 feet long.

The fossils we find range from prehistoric horse teeth to whale ears and vertibrates to mammoth teeth.  You may wonder why we find land mammal fossils in the gulf.  That would be because Florida has been above and below sea level about 6 times in the last 100 million years.  The Columbian Mammoth roamed in Florida some 2 miilion years ago and went extinct about 12,000 years ago.

The horse teeth are from the prehistoric Nannipus horse or three toed horse as it is also known.  It lived 13-2 million years ago.  It was about half the size of today's modern horse.

We are always finding new and interesting pieces so please be sure to check back often.

Thanks for visiting and if you are looking for something we do not have, please contact us so we can help you out.
